Open Letter to the President of the United States

George W. Bush
President of the United States
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Washington, DC 20500

Sir:

Various surveys and voter registration records have shown clearly by now that liberal professors vastly outnumber conservative professors at universities and colleges in the United States, and that the liberal scientific and educational establishment in essence succeeded in taking over research and higher education. As documented in detail on my Web site: http://suny-stonybrook.blogspot.com/, this has not happened by accident, but is the result of deliberate and sustained effort by a large number of liberals in the Academia to discriminate against their conservative colleagues in hiring, retention and promotion. As a consequence, it is currently impossible for a conservative scholar to be hired in a permanent position at universities and colleges in this country. I am urging you to take steps to stop this form of discrimination. Thank you for your kind attention.

Yours very truly,
Tibor Gasparik
Research Associate Professor

Communications with the U.S. Congress and Senate

Member of the United States Congress or Senate:

I would like to bring to your attention an open letter to the President of the United States, posted on my Web site: http://suny-stonybrook.blogspot.com/. In this letter I urged the President to stop the widespread discrimination against conservative professors at American universities and colleges in hiring, retention and promotion, as examplified by my case of persecution at the SUNY at Stony Brook. Many of the problems this country and the world are facing now may have resulted from the neglect of this issue. I am asking you to help the President by introducing legislation that would make this form of discrimination illegal and possible to prosecute. You may respond by posting a comment on my Web site under Communications with the U.S. Congress and Senate. Thank you for your kind attention on this matter.

Sincerely yours,
Tibor Gasparik
Research Associate Professor
SUNY at Stony Brook

Open Letter to the Science Adviser to the President

June 30, 2005

Dr. John H. Marburger, III, Director
Office of Science and Technology Policy
Executive Office of the President
Washington, DC 20502

Dear Dr. Marburger,

I apologize for this open letter, but my previous letter to you went unanswered. Here I would like to bring to your attention my new Web site and invite you to post a comment. The Web site http://suny-stonybrook.blogspot.com/ intends to document the discrimination against conservative and other non-liberal scientists at the universities in the United States in hiring, retention and promotion, and includes my account of persecution at the Department of Geosciences, SUNY at Stony Brook. I brought my case to your attention in the previous letter, including all supporting documentation, because I thought that you would be interested, as the previous President of the SUNY at Stony Brook, to find out how the University has been faring under the direction of your successor, Dr. Shirley Strum Kenny.

In my previous letter from July 9, 2004, I also brought to your attention the rapid deterioration in the funding environment for research caused by the extreme liberal policies introduced by the former NSF Director, Dr. Rita R. Colwell. I asked you to expedite the appointment of a new NSF Director because I thought that Dr. Bement, being at that time only an Acting Director, did not have the mandate to initiate the badly needed reforms. Subsequently, the President appointed Dr. Bement in September 2004. Unfortunately, I have not seen any evidence so far that Dr. Bement is going to introduce any reforms; in fact, he seems to continue to adhere to the extreme liberal policies of his predecessor. Thanks to her policies, research is no longer the highest priority, and the NSF now mainly funds a vast array of meetings, short courses and workshops, far in excess of what is needed to exchange ideas, disseminate research results, promote science and educate. Instead, the main purpose of these meetings, short courses and workshops appears to be liberal activism, indoctrination in the liberal viewpoints, brainwashing of students into accepting liberal ideas and favored dogmas of their leaders, glorification of the all-knowing leadership of the liberal scientific elite, and endless promotion of their meager scientific achievements and favored liberal causes, such as climate change or environment. Because of these policies, the primary mission of the NSF now appears to be the transformation of the American scientific community into some kind of a utopian society. Of course, there is no place in this society for conservative scientists, or even those scientists who are not sufficiently liberal in their convictions to accept that ideology is more important than science.

I hope you will use this opportunity to post a comment on my Web site to answer both letters. You might also consider advising the President to start paying attention to the widespread discrimination against conservative scientists in the Academia. The fact that this takeover of research and higher education by liberals was allowed to happen in this country is truly a national disgrace. Thank you for your kind attention on this matter.

Sincerely yours,
Tibor Gasparik
Research Associate Professor

Dear NSF Official,

I would like to bring to your attention my new Web site and invite you to post a comment. The Web site http://suny-stonybrook.blogspot.com/ intends to document the discrimination against conservative and other non-liberal scientists at the universities in the United States in hiring, retention and promotion, and includes my account of persecution at the Department of Geosciences, SUNY at Stony Brook. Because of this discrimination, I had to ask in my NSF research proposals submitted in 2003 and 2004 for the full salary, which resulted in the denials of funding. In my appeals of these denials I also pointed out what I would consider as serious charges of corruption in the review process caused by its liberal bias. My case and the supporting documentation were fully presented to you in these communications, yet you decided to ignore in your responses to my appeals all this evidence. In fact, your policies of preferential funding to institutions that condone this form of discrimination make you responsible for encouraging it. This is an opportunity for you to explain why a federal agency funded by American taxpayers supports such extreme liberal policies. I hope you will rise to this occasion.

Sincerely yours,
Tibor Gasparik

Dear Administrator,

I would like to bring to your attention my new Web site and invite you to post a comment. The Web site http://suny-stonybrook.blogspot.com/ intends to document the discrimination against conservative and other non-liberal scientists at the universities in the United States in hiring, retention and promotion, and includes my account of persecution at the Department of Geosciences. My case and the supporting documentation were presented to you in the past, yet you have decided not to take any action. This makes you responsible for condoning this form of discrimination and helps to explain why only 15 % of the university employees voted for President Bush in the last election. This is an opportunity for you to explain the reasons for your inaction. I hope you will rise to this occasion.

Sincerely yours,

My Case

The enclosed documents summarize the evidence in support of my claim that I was persecuted for 15 years by certain members of the liberal scientific establishment and various officials at two institutions: SUNY at Stony Brook and the National Science Foundation of the U.S. Government (NSF). I worked between 1985 and 2002 as Lab Manager and Research Associate Professor at the Department of Geosciences, SUNY at Stony Brook; the last 11 years as a member of a NSF Science and Technology Center, the Center for High Pressure Research (CHiPR). The CHiPR ended its planned 11-year life span on January 31, 2002, when I was dismissed, despite being its most valuable scientist, under the excuse that the project had ended. Yet, despite a large number of scientists employed by the CHiPR, I was the only one dismissed under this excuse. The CHiPR was “resurrected” after a few months as COMPRES (Consortium for Materials Properties Research in Earth Sciences), funded by the same NSF resources that were used previously to fund CHiPR, where all other scientists from CHiPR have continued their employment without any interruption. This reorganization, which resulted in the loss of my employment and ended my scientific career, occurred through negotiations between the executive staff of CHiPR and the officials in the EAR division of the NSF. Although I retained my position as Research Associate Professor at the Department of Geosciences, I am no longer able to obtain research funding from the NSF, find a comparable university position elsewhere, nor generate any income at the Department or the University. It is also clear now that the Program Directors in the EAR division of the NSF knew at the time of my dismissal that my scientific career was over, because they stopped sending me research proposals for review. This was not obvious to me at that time, otherwise I would not be wasting two years trying to find an academic position elsewhere. Prior to my dismissal, as an employee of the Research Foundation, I was persecuted for 15 years in a systematic pattern of abuse, harassment and bullying by some of my colleagues at the Department, with the intention to make my life miserable and thus induce me to quit on my own. The NSF officials “joined” in this campaign during the tenure of the former Director Dr. Rita R. Colwell, who introduced the extreme liberal policies that make it almost impossible for scientists who are not liberals to receive research funding. Since I am a refugee from communism, which is widely known, I cannot even pretend that I am a liberal; in fact I am a registered Republican. I believe this to be the main reason why I was blacklisted. My colleagues at the Department of Geosciences, all liberals, have refused to consider me for a permanent faculty position. The University also denied my request for promotion to full Research Professor based on the publication of my book summarizing my research, although it would not cost the University a penny, since they have not been paying me anything since January 31, 2002. The University also rejected my request for hearings to address my grievances. My case was presented to various officials at the NSF and the SUNY at Stony Brook, and my colleagues at the Department of Geosciences, in a series of letters sent between April 2003 and July 2004. The letters and the responses to them follow, approximately, in the chronological order.

Correspondence with the National Science Foundation

My letters to the NSF officials were formulated, to assure responses, as appeals of the denials of funding for my research proposals submitted in 2003 and 2004. While the required responses to these appeal letters did nominally address the appeals, everything else was ignored, including what I would consider as serious charges of corruption.
